Women, PTSD and Alternative Healing

An associate is writing a piece on the connection and impacts of PTSD on the recovery of brain injury victims. She asked those of us who’ve dealt with it for comments. As I wrote my response, I realized that this information could be important to others in many ways.

I don't have a brain injury, but I've been dealing with PTSD for about 7 years now as a result of several years of emotional and mental abuse in a marriage. It was compounded when he and my youngest, and last surviving sister both passed within 6 months of each other. Shortly after, I lost my career, and soon ran out of money, all of this happened within a year (2005-2006).

When my symptoms first appeared in late 2004, I began to realize I hadn't healed from other loses either. My son was murdered in 1988, and my second oldest sister was murdered in 1990, both victims of violence. My mom and my oldest sister passed between 1995 and 1987, respectively.

I tried traditional treatments but they didn't help much. So I turned to alternative healing. I became a Reiki Master and Tapping practitioner and used these energy healing modalities to heal myself and understand how and why it happened to me.

I used to think PTSD was a result of war trauma. Now I know that's not always the case. During my research I found statistics saying approx 30% of women suffer from mild to severe PTSD as a result of loss and abuse.

Mine was pretty bad for a long time. I'm still healing, but I'm much better now. Far too often traditional treatments like therapy and medications don't address the energetic and spiritual injuries at the root of PTSD.

We know physical abuse is bad because it leaves scars. However, emotional and mental abuse leave no visible scars because they happen at the soul level. We also don’t realize that along with emotional and mental abuse, there’s usually a sexual abuse component. That can be mild to severe in its own right.

Unless you’ve experienced it yourself, you don’t realize how incredibly damaging any kind of abuse can be. But, once the deep soul-level issues are healed, the trauma heals too.

Unfortunately, our society doesn't recognize the real impact of abuse unless it's physical, so the injuries go unnoticed and sufferers are expected and told to 'just get over it and move on'. But, it’s not that simple.

This ‘advice’, though well-intended only makes things worse because it makes the person feel there’s something ‘wrong or broken’ in them because they can’t just get over it and move on. Now their already damaged self-esteem bottoms.

Feelings of helplessness, unworthiness and rejection set in and become impacted in the psyche. The trauma deepens and they sink into despair. This is when substance abuse and thoughts of suicide begin. I know…I’ve been there.

Medications often make things worse because it becomes the lifeline for the sufferer. They can't function without it. Medications are like band-aids on bullet wounds. Healing the real trauma that resides in the 'energy and spiritual body' is the real key to recovery.
